The Cover Feature shows the different effects of H2 and NaBH4 pretreatments on Pd-based catalysts for o-xylene oxidation. In their Full Paper, Y. Wang et al. show that the metallic Pd species are the active sites for the catalytic oxidation of o-xylene at low temperature range. The controversy on the role of Pd valence state in catalytic oxidation reaction probably originates from the changes of the support's valence state or crystal structure, induced by H2 reduction. The NaBH4 pretreatment could avoid the undesired changes of the reducible support, and therefore it is a more appropriate method than H2 reduction for the preparation of supported metallic noble-metal catalysts.
