Abstract: Selective synthesis of linear and gemini quaternary ammonium surfactants was accomplished by reacting the corresponding alkyl alcohols with 2-chloro-N, N-dimethyl- ethylamine under basic conditions. The amines were quaternized with methyl chloride or methyl iodide.
