Chemistry. The primary route utilized in the preparation of the desired carboxyarylindoles is illustrated in Scheme I. Condensation of an a-halo ketone with an enamine2! 13 in either toluene3 (procedure A) or DMF (procedure B) afforded a 1, 4-diketone in moderate to good yield. In many cases the milder DMF procedure gave better yields of purer products. A majority of the diketones (Table 11) were characterized only by NMR and ir spectra and ...
