While the literature is replete with numerous examples of polyfunctional triarylmethanes and carbinols, compounds of the type 1 have not been described. The corresponding trichloride has been mentioned, 2 but the method used would not lend itself toward large-scale preparation, nor was it directly applicable to the synthesis of the desired fluorinated analogues.
