It has long been known that certain a, P-unsaturated ethers rearrange on heating to form ketones. For the first example we are indebted to Clai~ en,~ who found that a-ethoxystyrene readily forms phenyl propyl ketone “on short superheating such as boiling for a few hours under two atmospheres' pressure.” Only a few such rearrangements have been re-~ orded,~ and the reaction is not general, since ethyl/3-ethoxycrotonate, a-methoxymesityl oxide and ...
