Previous attempts to prepare phenols having more than one wtho-or para-trimethylsilyl substituent have failed because of aryl-silicon cleavage during hydr~ lysis.~ It has been found that the aryloxytrimethylsilanes can be converted to the phenols without appreciable silicon-carbon cleavage by treating them with a concentrated solution of sodium methoxide in anhydrous methanol, diluting with water, and extracting the phenol with pentane. ...
