IT IEI gen chloride was eliminated. A quantitative experiment showed that at 110-125'only 1 mole of hydrogen chloride was produced; work-up led to the crystalline dichlorotetramethylbenzocyclobutene II, 6 mp 73-74', in nearly 90% yield.
