A systematic synthesis approach for the preparation of a family of phosphonic acid derivatized Ru (II) polypyridyl complexes is reported. Ligand variations are used to vary the electronic structure by incorporating electron-donating or-withdrawing ligands as a way to tune redox properties and excited-state energies.
