Sixteen acylanthranils were prepared and allowed to react with primary amines to give the corresponding benzamides, 4, and/or quinazolones, 5, which confirms the results of other investigators. The product distributions, however, are consistent with our recent suggestion that these products are formed competitively via alternative pathways A and B, as indicated in Scheme I, rather than sequentially 5 from 4 as believed originally.
