Explanations for the results obtained are offered. benzenesulfonylbenzoic acid in 80% yield and o-bromophenyl phenyl sulfone gave the same acid in 64% yield. phenyl phenyl sulfone gave a 54% yield of 3-bromo-2-carboxydiphenyl sulfone. 52'% of 4-bromo-2- carboxydiphenyl sulfone, and in one experiment, 2% of p-benzenesulfonylbenzoic acid. sulfone gave a 60% yield of 2-benzenesulfonyl-5-thiophenecarboxylic acid.
