The finding by Groves and co-workers1 in 1979 that iodosyl- benzene transfers an 'oxene' equivalent to iron(m) tetra- phenylporphyrin salts initiated investigations on the use of a variety of oxidizing agents to generate porphyrin-bound higher valent state iron 0x0 and manganese 0x0 species.
