Five-membered N-alkylsultams (I), prepared from the corresponding,\--alkylpropane sultainee, RKH&HZCH~ CH~ SO~@(11) or 3-bromopropanesulfonamides, BrCH&HRCH&O* NHR (VII), were cleaved rapidly, at room temperature and below, by methanolic or ethereal hydrogen bromide or hydrogen chloride solution, and at 118'by acetic acid.
