In 1897, Wislicenus and co-workersl reported this ring system as resulting from the condensation of a-keto esters with o-aminophenols. Later Biekert, et CLZ.,~ prepared a considerable number of such compounds; but except for a passing reference to bacteriological testing, no mention was made of biological properties.
