An alternate route for the synthesis of naphthalene building blocks 1-4 has been developed, starting from readily available 6-alkoxybenzocyclobutenones. As thermolysis of a propynylbenzocyclobutenol only provided the naphthalene in low yield, allenyl-substituted benzocyclobutenols were investigated.
