In earlier communications,* there has been described the cyclization of o-benzylphenones to give meso substituted hydrocarbons. The present work was undertaken to discover whether this mode of cyclization might be ex-tended to o-benzhydrylphenones. If this could be accomplished, a new method would be afforded for the synthesis of 9-alkyl-or 9-aryl-10- phenylanthracenes.
