Whitmore and Laughlin'found that when certain aliphatic acids were treated with phosphorus pentoxide at temperatures in the neighborhood of 150'the relative yields of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide were dependent upon the character of the alkyl group attached to the carboxyl carbon.
