Abstract A simple synthesis of 4-, 5-, 6-, and 7-hydroxy-and-methoxyin-doles via cyanoalkylation of O-protected nitrophenols by vicarious nucleophilic substitution of hydrogen, followed by catalytic hydrogenation of the (2-nitroaryl) acetonitriles obtained is described.
