Abstract A convenient preparation of t-butyl methylthiomethyl ether (2) and its conversion to t- butyl chloromethyl ether (1) are described. Methylthiomethanol (4), which was previously unknown, was isolated as a by-product from the preparation of (2): it is a stable distillable liquid.
