The first total synthesis of gelsemoxonine (1) has been accomplished. Divinylcyclopropane– cycloheptadiene rearrangement of the highly functionalized substrate was successfully applied to assemble the spiro-quaternary carbon center connected to the bicyclic seven- membered core structure.
