(И) of sodium carbonate afforded 1, 8-diformylanthracene (VU) 23. But the procedure was found to be scarcely feasible for the preparation of VII owing to its highly sensitive nature to reaction conditions which makes impossible to improve the low yield and the poor reproducibility. The reduction of the dimethyl ester III with lithium aluminum hydride yilded 1, 8-bis-hydroxymethylanthracene (VI).
