The syntheses of l'-fluoro-1, 2-benzanthracene, Vlb, and l'-fluoro-10-methyl-l, 2- benzanthraeene, VIa, were accomplished in'good yield by a new method involving cyclization of 0-(8-fluoro-2-naphthylmethyl) benzaldehyde, Vb, and of 0-[1-(8-fluoro-2- naphthyl) ethyl] benzaldchyde, Va, respectively, by heating with polyphosphoric acid.
