2, 3-Dihydroxyterephthalic acid (3) and derivatives such as dimethyl 2, 3- dihydroxyterephthalate (4) are important synthetic intermediates.'They are key building blocks in the synthesis of specific sequestering agents for removal of iron (III) from human transfenin2 and in the synthesis of antidote agents for hazardous radionuclides such as Pu (IV)'and Ga (III)."
