Abstract

The reductive dimerization of 10-methyleneanthrone by diphenylhydroxymethyl radicals, generated by thermal dissociation of benzpinacol, gives 1, 2-bis (10-hydroxy-9-anthry1) ethane. Its utilization in the synthesis of an-thronylethyl-substituted anthracenes, dianthrylethanes, and dianthrylethylenes is described. The compound reported in the literature to be the cis isomer of 1, 2-bis (9-anthryl) ethylene apparently is 9- ...
