2-Hydroxy-5, 6-diphenylpyrazine is readily nitrated in the 3-position. This was proved by degradation and by reduction to the correspondirrg hydroxyaminodiphenylpyrazine whose structure was demonstrated by two independent syntheses. It is shown that 2-hydroxy-3, 6- diphenylpyrazine is nitrated only under more vigorous conditions, yielding a variety of products.
