Abstract

Abstract The use of zinc and aqueous potassium hydroxide for the reductive epoxy ring opening of thebaine (1) and 6-demethoxythebaine (2) is described. The reaction affords exclusively β-dihydrothebaine (3) and 6-demethoxy-β-dihydrothebaine (4), respectively. The synthesis of desoxycodeine-A (9) has been improved and evidence for its configuration is discussed.
