Abstract

Formylation of 1, 2-bis (dimethylamino) ethylene afforded the 2-dimethylaminotrimethinium salt Ill, the saponification of which with alkali led to dimethylaminomalonaldehyde. Formylation of dimethylaminoacetaldehyde dimethyl acetal and diethylacetal proceeds under the formation of 2-methoxy-and 2-ethoxytrimethinium salts.
