Abstract

synthesis of taiwanin C was demonstrated by Meyers and Avila. 1 We found need for large quantities of 1 in a synthesis of an extended-aromatic epipodophyllotoxin analog2 The only prior synthesis of 1 yielded it as a minor product from the metalatiodcarbonylation of 5- methoxynaphtho [2, 3-d]-l, 3-dioxole (2J. 1 Compound 2. was prepared in 10% overall yield from piperonal. 3 OMe H02C OMe tdl. 0 0 0 2.
