Abstract

Reaction between nitriles and alcohols or olefins to give carboxylic amides, the Ritter reaction, is well documented. 1 This reaction is a very efficient way to prepare amides with secondary or tertiary alkyl groups on the nitrogen. Modification 2 of the Ritter reaction allows primary alcohols to react with nitriles when activated by trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride, complementing the traditional Ritter reactions.
