Abstract

Summary 13enzopinacol and substituted benzopinacols are converted by a small amount of sodium alcoholate into a mixture of equivalent parts of ketone and hydrol. Free ketyl radicals are formed as intermediate products; these radicals are then converted by unreacted pinacol into the ketone and hydrol.'The pinacols are reduced quantitatively to hydrols by sodium amalgam in anhydrous ether-benzene solutions.
