Abstract
phosphorus tribromide (19.0 g, 0.07 mole), and xylene (175 ml) were heated for 4 hr at the boiling point of the solvent. The turbid reaction mixture was poured over asbestos. The resulting clear liquid was distilled under reduced pressure to give 37.0 g (68.5%) of tribromoacetyl bromide, bp 40-43"(0.8 mm), nl*. b 1.6158 [lit.@ bp 88-90'(12 mm)].
