Abstract

I phorus oxychloride and phosphorus pentachloride. Reduction of (11) by tin and hydrochloric acid according to the method of Mikhailov'for the corresponding quinoline compound gave 4-methylbenzo (h) quinoline (111). Conversion of (11) to (111) was also effected by hydriodic acid and red phosphorus at 170-180'. Benzo (h) quinoline-4-aldehyde (IV) was obtained by the oxidation of (111) using selenium dioxide.
