In the course of some studies on the metalation of polynuclear heterocyclic the metalation of thianthrene and dibenzo-p-dioxin by RLi compounds has been investigated. On the basis of earlier observations, it might have been predicted that the metalation of thianthrene would take place in the 1-position, or ortho to the hetero element.
