Abstract
A uniform rate law is applicable for the oxidation of chlorine dioxide by the hypochlorite ion in the entire neutral to alkaline pH range. At the same time, there is a changeover in the stoichiometry as a function of pH. A detailed mechanism is postulated that provides appropriate interpretation of the kinetic and stoichiometric results.
