Abstract
Activating triggers, selective markers, and the residual regenerative potential of scar-forming myofibroblasts are largely determined by their origin. In this issue ofCell Stem Cell, Schneider et al. report that bone marrow myofibroblasts derive from Gli1+mesenchymal stromal cells and that a Gli inhibitor targets them for elimination in mice and humans, ameliorating fibrosis.
