Abstract

Macrocyclic chelates of lanthanide ions bearing aminobis (methylenephosphonate) side arms via variable linkers exhibit unusual properties in the presence and absence of Ca2+. In contrast to previous Ca-responsive probes, the longitudinal relaxivities decrease upon addition of Ca2+. The behavior is based on a calcium-induced aggregation of the lanthanide complexes.
