Abstract

Summary 1. The rate of bromination of stilbene in methyl alcohol solution is sharply diminished by bromide ions, but not by hydrogen ions. 2. Therefore, although stilbene methoxy bromide is the principal product of the reaction, methyl hypobromite is not responsible for its formation.
