Abstract

The photochemical reactions of 2-alkyl-2, 3-epoxy-2, 3-dihydro-1, 4-naphthoquinones with good hydrogen donors such as xanthene or 2-propanol gave 2-alkyl-2-hydroxy-2, 3-dihydro- 1, 4-naphthoquinones, 2-alkyl-3-hydroxyl-l, 4-naphthoquinones, and 9, 9'-bixanthenyl as the main products. For example, the photochemical reaction of 2-methyl-2, 3-epoxy-2, 3-dihydro- l, 4-naphthoquinone (1 b) with xanthene gave 2-methyl-2-hydroxy-2, 3-dihydro-1, 4- ...
