Abstract
A new, generally useful malonic ester synthesis has been developed on the basis of the alkoxycarbonyl moiety as a blocking group. Thus trialkyl methanetricarboxylates, symmetrical or unsymmetrical, were converted to their stable, nonhygroscopic sodio salts which were readily alkylated with multifunctional halides.
