Abstract
J. Org. Chem., Vol. 49, No. 24, 1984 4737 g (30 mmol) of gentisic acid with 37.9 g (60 mmol) of ceric (1V) ammonium sulfate was treated with HCl gas which was bubbled slowly beneath the liquid surface with stirring at room temperature for a period of 50 min. The flask was then thoroughly flushed with nitrogen, sealed, and refrigerated overnight.
