Abstract
In our hands, however, only poor yields of 4 could be obtained under a variety of experimental protocols (direct or inverse addition of the disulfide, temperatures as low as- 100" C). Control experiments established that monolithiation was a clean process (quenching with aldehydes produced allylic alcohols in almost quantitative yield), suggesting that the problematic step is the sulfenylation.
