Abstract

A novel monoterpene of the oxygenated thymol type, namely p-cymene-3-methoxy-7-ol (IV) was isolated from the young roots of Inula viscosa Ait, as its isobutyrate (II) and isovalerate (I). A third volatile component accompanying I and II was nerylisovalerate (III). The structures of I, II and III were determined by IR, NMR and mass spectroscopy and confirmed by synthesis.
