Abstract
The von Braun reaction in which an N-alkylamide is converted into an alkyl halide has been studied with particular attention to structural and electronic characteristics which influence the course of the reaction and yield of alkyl halide. For benzamides of non-benzylamines the yields will parallel the accessibility of the an-carbon to nucleophilic attack.
