Abstract
The phosphine reaction of the title is shown to afford the true pentacovalent phosphole, not a zwitterionic product, but the arsine reaction takes a different course, yielding the acyclic dimethyl triphenylarsenylidene-oxalacetate (VI). Various facets of the chemistry of these systems are reported.
