Abstract
The rate expression for the base decomposition of nitrogen trichloride is-d [NCl,]/dt= 2 (ko+ k,[OH-]+ kHB [HB][OH-]+ k2 [OH-I2)[NCl3], based on the stoichiometry 2NC13+ 60H--N2+ 30CI-+ 3C1-+ 3H20. Values of the rate constants (25.0 OC, fi= 0.5) are 1.6 X 10" sI for ko, 8 MI sl for k,, and 890 M-2 sl for k2. The specific-base/generaI-acid-catalyzed path gives kHB values (M-2 sI) of 2.1 X lo3 for H2P04-, 7.6 X lo2 for B (OH),, 65 for HC03-, and 128 for ...
