Abstract
During a search for photosensitive protecting groups, it has been shown that benzyloxycarbonyl groups, particularly those substituted by electronreleasing groups, are readily fissioned by ultraviolet irradiation. The mechanism of these photolyses involves heterolysis to benzylic carbonium ions. This process has been used to detect benzyloxycarbonylamino-acids on paper chromatograms.
