Abstract
The reductive dimerization of 10-methyleneanthrone by diphenylhydroxymethyl radicals, generated by thermal dissociation of benzpinacol, gives 1, 2-bis (10-hydroxy-9-anthry1) ethane. Its utilization in the synthesis of an-thronylethyl-substituted anthracenes, dianthrylethanes, and dianthrylethylenes is described.
