Abstract: A new method has been developed for the resolution of (+)-and (-)- phenylbiphenylyl-a-naphthylcar-binol. The alcohols had been partially resolved by Wallis.*(= t)-Ar3COH was converted to (= t)-Ar3COCH2-C02H by alkylation of ethyl glycolate with Ar3CCl followed by saponification.(-)-Ar3COCH2C02H was separated as the brucine salt and (+)-Ar3COCH2C02H was separated as the cinchonidine salt.
