Abstract
2-.+ 1-2+ 1-. nucleophilic attack by the carbon atom of Me2C= N02-at the carbonyl carbon of 1 followed by SNi displacement of halogen by the carbonyl oxygen atom. The a-hydroxy ketones (4) may arise by 0-attack of Me2C= N02-at either the a or carbonyl carbon atoms of 1 to form nitronic esters, which decomposed during the reaction or upon workup.'
