Abstract: A metal-free intramolecular annulation of 2-aryloxybenzaldehydes to xanthones is disclosed, which proceeds through the direct oxidative coupling of an aldehyde CÀH bond and aromatic CÀH bonds using tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) as a promoter in aqueous medium.
