Abstract
The gas-phase pyrolysis of 3-isochromanones provides a new synthesis of benzocyclobutenes, including the parent hydrocarbon, 21, benzocyclobutenone@), and several benzocyclobutenes with oxygenated substituents on the aryl ring, 25 and 28; fulveneallene (9) is also prepared in high yield. The relationship between the thermal and elec-tron impact induced decomposition of the isochromanones is described.
